Built in 1936, the VT 14 bridge over the Winooski River in the Village of East Montpelier, Vermont will be replaced in 2018.
The new bridge will be wider, with a third lane and traffic signal added to aide left turns onto US 2 as well as onto the bridge from US 2. Additionally, this project includes the reconstruction of Route 2 in vicinity of the bridge. CCS Constructors, Inc of Morrisville, VT is the project’s contractor.
Work on the project began in the fall of 2016, with the installation of drainage structures under US 2, trenching of new telecommunications conduits and relocation of utility poles.
In the summer and fall of 2017, VTrans reconstructed about 900 feet of Route 2. Old rigid concrete pavement underlying the roadway which is detrimental to the asphalt wearing surface was removed. A new sidewalk was also installed. A temporary bridge was installed in November 2017 to be used in 2018 while the VT 14 bridge is removed and replaced.
To ensure safety during some construction activities in 2018, it may be necessary to close the temporary bridge to traffic. VTrans will limit the closures to up to 14 days and it is likely these closures will not occur on consecutive weeks but rather intermittent days. A detour route will be established for these brief closure periods.
In the spring of 2019 the project site will be restored and final paving and crosswalks completed.
